Revenue Per Available Unit (RevPAU)

Total rental revenue divided by all available vehicle-days, used or idle. The single number that captures both pricing and utilization.

RevPAU is total rental revenue divided by all available vehicle-days in a period — rented and idle alike. A 10-car fleet over a 30-day month has 300 available car-days; if those cars earned EUR 21,000, RevPAU is EUR 70. Hotels know the same metric as RevPAR; car rental adopted the structure because the problem is identical: a perishable inventory unit that earns zero if it doesn't sell today.

The key difference vs ADR is what's in the denominator. ADR divides revenue by rented days only and so answers 'what did we get per rented day?'. RevPAU divides by all available days and answers 'what did we get per car we owned?'. ADR can stay flat while RevPAU collapses — the fleet is still pricing well, just renting less. RevPAU is the metric that doesn't let one of those two failure modes hide behind the other.

RevPAU compounds two levers a fleet manager controls directly: pricing (ADR) and demand capture (utilization). Mathematically, RevPAU equals ADR multiplied by utilization rate. A EUR 50 ADR at 70% utilization gives RevPAU of EUR 35; a EUR 60 ADR at 55% utilization gives RevPAU of EUR 33 — the higher-rate fleet is doing worse. This is why RevPAU is the better health metric: it forces both levers into the same conversation.

What good looks like depends on fleet mix. Mediterranean tourist fleets in summer often clear EUR 55+ RevPAU on economy classes; corporate long-term fleets target a flatter EUR 30–40 year-round; premium classes have higher ADR but lower utilization and converge to similar RevPAU as economy. The improvement playbook is the same in every segment — close avoidable idle days first (turnaround discipline, calendar gaps, defleet stragglers), then raise rate.

In car rental software like Renviq, RevPAU is computed live from the booking ledger and the fleet roster — by class, location, and period — so the trade-off between pricing and occupancy is visible before month-end, not after.
