Average Daily Rate (ADR)

ADR is the realised per-day revenue a fleet actually earned over a period, computed as total rental revenue divided by total rental days. If a 10-car fleet earned EUR 42,000 across 1,200 rented days in a month, ADR is EUR 35. The denominator is rented days only — idle days don't dilute the number, which is what separates ADR from RevPAU.

ADR is not the same as the daily rate on the rate card. The published daily rate is the price a customer sees on the quote; ADR is what the operator collected once length-of-rent discounts, seasonal adjustments, promotional codes, OTA commissions, and channel mix were applied. The two numbers can differ by 15–30% in normal operation, and the gap is itself a signal — a widening gap means discounting is doing more work than headline pricing.

Why ADR matters: it is the cleanest single measure of pricing power. Compared to the same month last year, an ADR drop with steady utilization means prices are softer; an ADR rise with steady utilization means pricing is holding. Segmenting ADR by vehicle class, location, and channel surfaces where margin is leaking — a premium class trading at the same ADR as the mid-tier is usually a discount-bundling problem, not a demand problem.

Seasonal and discount effects show up in ADR with a lag of one rental cycle. A summer-peak fleet running EUR 60 ADR in August will see EUR 30 ADR in November as long bookings on lower shoulder rates replace short peak bookings on higher rates. Length-of-rent discounts (cheaper per-day on 7+ day bookings) pull ADR down even at full demand, which is by design — the operator trades ADR for utilization on long bookings.
